Flying High: Buffalo Can Soon Expect Its Own Circus and Movement Arts Center

Here at Stay Active in Buffalo NY, we pride ourselves on bringing you quality content in the form of event updates and class reviews. However, the past few weeks we have been on hiatus due to some personal health issues.
This week we would like to introduce you to The Bird's Nest - AcroYoga and Circus arts' newest venue in WNY.
The below article is courtesy of the AcroYoga group of Buffalo NY.

The Bird’s Nest Will Open Spring of 2017 with out-of-the-box fitness and movement arts-based offerings.

Ben Madoff, a founding member of AcroYoga Buffalo, has purchased a 3,000 sq foot former warehouse and office in the Larkin District to unite circus enthusiasts in the WNY area! Actually, Madoff envisions this space to welcome “carnies” and “townsfolk” alike. The purpose of The Bird’s Nest is to create a safe space that promotes health through non-conventional ways of movement and collaboration.

Various fitness and performance style classes will be held at The Bird’s Nest on a regular basis. These classes will range from yoga and dance to aerial arts and partner acrobatics. In addition, The Bird’s Nest’s layout is ideal for accommodating performances and events including private parties, corporate team building and more.

In order to fund renovations and equipment for the space, an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign is set to launch on December 3rd, 2016. A free launch party fundraiser will be held at the facility on the 3rd to kick-start The Bird’s Nest Campaign and introduce the public to the space.

When asked why he wants The Bird’s Nest to open, Madoff explained, “I want a home for my community to learn and train their skills with one another, as well as a place where we can welcome those who are intrigued, curious, and possibly apprehensive…to come and fly with us.”
Madoff has been practicing AcroYoga for over four years and feels it is something that anyone can learn if they are willing to try. Aside from his passion for acrobatics, Madoff also dabbles in fire spinning and aerial silks. The practice of multiple pursuits is a common trait amongst members of the circus arts communities.

Numerous organizations will benefit from having a unified space for cross-collaboration as well as specialized trainings. The hope is that opening The Bird’s Nest will breed support and innovation among and between the circus arts communities in the area, while also being a quirky contribution to the growing scene of performance art in Buffalo. Madoff and his collaborators at The Bird’s Nest also hope to use their new space to spread their passion for the yoga principles of kindness, mindfulness, and community.

The Bird’s Nest will be the first of its kind in the Western New York Region. Bringing a circus arts studio to Buffalo offers another layer of richness and variety to the local arts and performance scene. When living in a society where funding of physical education and the arts are being cut back, The Bird’s Nest provides opportunity to broaden the horizons of children and adults alike.
