Class review - Garage Fitness Studio Bootcamp

With the dicey start to this spring weather, I've been sticking to indoor fitness. Looking for ways to get moving that will both challenge me, and work around my recent injuries. It's nice when you find a workout within the convenience of your home, but there's something to be said for both companionship, and for a good trainer pushing you to your limits.

This Sunday, my fitness partner-in-crime (Joanne Wu) and I hit up the free fitness bootcamp that Garage Fitness Studio was running at the McKinley Mall in Hamburg. As per usual, I showed up a little late, not knowing what to expect. Unlike usual, I actually remembered a water bottle - a definite boon at a class like this.

Judy from Garage was there, along with two of her instructors - Matt McDougle and Amy Nappo. Along with her people, she had also brought a multitude of 10-15lb kettlebells and dumbbells, resistance bands, heavy ropes, and yoga mats. This class truly provided everything, and required that you bring nothing but a good attitude and a willingness to push yourself (and water. And also sneakers and comfortable clothing. Ok, you had to bring a few things, but nothing crazy).

At the beginning of the class, Matt and Amy warmed the class up with some body weight exercises and dynamic stretching. After a few months of being sedentary, you'd be surprised how much just doing jumping-jacks gets your heart racing. Once the class was sufficiently warm, they moved into the meat of the material.

First up was circuit training. The various weights and bands and ropes were set up in stations around the area, each with a designated purpose, which Matt went over ahead of time. Our first station was tricep lifts of kettlebells, and we moved from there through the ropes, bicep curls into an overhead lift, side steps with resistance bands, and pushups. Modifications that added squats or other movements could add more of a challenge to each of these stations.

This circuit was the foundation of the workout, and was performed a total of 6 times. After every second circuit, we did a set of exercises that focused on a specific part of the body. I'm a fan of any workout that moves to music; they did utilize several pop songs, with different sections breaking up the workout throughout the song. I was particularly excited that they played Misery Business by Paramore (a personal favorite) for the abs section, which made it much more fun. A lot of people seemed psyched to hear Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani for squats, and Amy (the instructor) was rocking it out to that tune in the front of the group.

Amy and Matt made the workout really fun, and even when I was straining and thought that I was going to drop, their energy was encouraging and kept the group going. Their dance moves (and Judy's) were infectious, and everyone there seemed to have a lot of fun during their "Sunday-funday" workout.

Garage collaborates with Gap at the McKinley Mall pretty regularly to hold free classes (with a discount for people who shop after the event). Keep an eye on their facebook page, and here at this blog for future events - I would highly recommend attending them!

Class Review - Irish Set Dance

Image of Innis Free Set Dance group from The Buffalo News

Trying something different can be nerve wracking, or even just straight up frightening.  Externally you may be afraid to look silly, or incompetent.  Internally, you may be afraid that you'll feel like a failure.  So many people let this fear dictate what they will try, limiting themselves to things that they know they will succeed at, or things that are familiar.

Usually I am the person in this blog who is stepping outside of my comfort zone - putting my pride on the line, and risking looking silly - I am very familiar with these feelings.  This week, however, I got to introduce a friend to a completely unfamiliar way to get active (one that I, on the other hand, am extremely familiar with).

Joanne and I as dance partners

Every Tuesday night, the Innis Free group meets to learn and perform Irish Set dances at the Buffalo Irish Center in South Buffalo.  This group primarily consists of 40-70 year olds, with the odd exception of a younger person (myself included), proving that activity is certainly not just for the young.  They are extremely welcoming, and very graciously allow new-comers to jump in and learn these centuries-old dances.

Irish Set dancing is different than the Irish Dance you probably think of - depending on who you have seen perform, you may either be thinking of young girls in giant curly wigs with crazy, sparkly dresses and beauty pageant makeup (the kind of dance that I did), or you may be thinking of the graceful, flowing dresses and hair of Riverdance and Lord of the Dance.  That is Irish Step dance, which is more regimented, and has morphed over the years to become very different than Irish Set dance, which has stayed very traditional.

Irish Set dance came from Quadrille court dances performed primarily at the French court in the 1700's and 1800's.  These forms were adopted by the Irish and adapted to fit their music.  The forms themselves usually start out as a square with two people on each side of the square - traditionally, a man on the left, and a woman on the right.  They then perform a set routine, depending on which dance they are performing.

An outdoor dance in the early 20th century

These dances were performed all over Ireland, and many towns across the country had their own specific dance that was native to those people.  A dance master would travel across the country, collecting new dances, and teaching them to people in exchange for food and board.  This is how popular set dances like the Skibbereen, the Caledonian, and the East Galway set came to be known by dancers all over Ireland.  Now, these sets are written down, and taught all over the world to groups still eager to learn traditional Irish dances.

Now, unlike Irish Step dance, which is very regimented in its steps, and takes many years of lessons to become very proficient, Irish Set dance is much more easy-going, and the steps are more loose and casual. Mostly consisting of stepping, swinging, and some low skipping, it's not as exhausting as running through a 2min Step dance. In fact, the goal is to get through the entire dance without breathing too hard, allowing you to be able to dance through the night without exhausting yourself. Now, don't get me wrong - it's a workout, and you'll sweat - it's just not going to knock you on your butt after a few moments.

Very patiently, the dancers in the Inis Free organization walk through the sets, teaching the different forms, and explaining the terminology. Even as a brand-new, never set foot on the floor, complete beginner, Joanne picked the steps up quickly and surely, even able to match the footing on the skips as she circled the floor with her partner.  Picking up the pattern of the dance, she looked like a natural, even as her face betrayed the fact that she was feeling a bit self-conscious (she shouldn't have been - she did great!).

In a Waltz hold

If you're an American of Irish descent looking to connect to your Irish roots, a non-Irish American interested in learning more about the culture of the Éire, or just someone looking for a new way to get active, check out the Innis Free group - they are wonderful and welcoming, and will take you under their wing.

Fitness Class Review - Yoga Flow and Inversions at Lululemon

As I mentioned last week, I have been out of commission for a while due to injuries. But this week, after my foray into TRX on Monday, I was full bore, guns blazing, on a mission for fitness.

Saturday morning found me freezing cold and exhausted, and presented every obstacle, but rather than rolling over and going back to sleep, I persisted in heading over to Galleria Mall for a yoga class at Lululemon Athletica Buffalo. And despite trying three different entrances, and eventually parking at the complete opposite end of the mall, I was only about 10 minutes late (like I said - obstacles #firstworldproblems).

The store manager was very helpful, setting my mat up for me on an empty space in the center of the room while I pulled off my jacket and boots. The lights were turned down, and the display tables had been pushed to the periphery, creating a cool, comfortable, decently spacious area to do yoga. In the background, a talented musician named Kurt Ebsary from Leaky Ledge Studios was playing a baglama unobtrusively, contributing to the atmosphere. (Check out the video of him playing baglama on his facebook page! I'd never heard this instrument before, and it's very pretty. Also, he's totally on Spotify if you want to give him a listen.)

The ever-talented Dr. Joanne Wu of Fit2BWell was teaching, with assistance from Jeanna from Acroyoga Buffalo, who was adjusting form and assisting people to get into poses. Ostensibly, the first part of the class was just a standard yoga flow class, but every move was selected to work on the basic components of the handstand. Working on the core, on balance, on stability, and other basic foundations of yoga will help with confidence and strength when it comes to actually supporting yourself, upside down, completely on your hands and arms.

I know that I am not the only one who is very intimidated by inverted poses - by nature, we are inclined to protect our noggins, and many of the inverted poses put us in seeming precarious positions with nothing between our cranium and the hard, unforgiving ground (or a slightly less hard, slightly-but-not-much more forgiving yoga mat).

These poses are what some people consider the gold-medal yoga poses - the most impressive, the most photogenic, and the most fun to show off for your friends. (I mean, come on. What yoga blog doesn't have a gorgeous photo of the blogger standing on their hands at the edge of a canyon, the top of a mountain, or on a beach?) And while they are by no means necessary to the practice of yoga, they are a nice push to the next level for experience practitioners.

Photos that a very cursory google search turned up of yogis doing handstands in picturesque locations

I had originally thought that once the flow part of the class had finished, I would sit the inversion part out. Between how out of shape I felt, and the recent wrist surgery, it just didn't seem attainable. However, the partner-based movements eased into the inversion so gently, I figured that I could try them to the point where I didn't feel comfortable, and then tap out.

__________________________________

The first exercise was to have two partners, one in plank position, and the other standing behind them. The person standing was to pick up the legs of the planking person by the ankles, and position them at the standing person's hips. The standing person would then walk forward toward the center-mass of the planking person, pushing their legs up as they went. The planking person would allow their body to pike (fold) at the waist to an "L" shape with their arms, head, neck and torso perpendicular to the ground. This allows them to experience the sensation of being somewhat balanced on their hands, and having their head below their body. From there if they were comfortable, the standing person could begin to bring the inverted person's legs up, with the goal being to have them above their torso in a handstand position.

This exercise was an interesting introduction to the feeling of a handstand - as I mentioned before, it gets you used to the idea of being upside down, without the pressure (at first) of balancing and stabilizing your legs. It was a little bit nerve wracking, however, having a partner push your legs from from a plank - it did feel like if they pushed a little too hard, you could go over on the back of your head, and there was nothing you could do about it. This, of course, did not happen, and my partner was wonderful, but I am a habitual worrier, and pathologically need control. Which is why I liked the second exercise

________________________________

The second exercise again involved two partners, with one still standing behind the other as the support, but this time the inverted person starts in 3-leg dog, placing the lifted leg onto the other person's shoulder. The standing person held onto their leg and braced, while the inverted person tightened their core to straighten their body out, placing their weight on the support person's shoulder, and lifting their other leg. The support person could then gently guide them into an upright (upside-down) position.

I definitely liked this better than the first one. I think it may have to do with feeling more in control. While fundamentally they do very similar things, and reach the same end-goal, this modification felt more comfortable to me. Definitely a good example of why teachers should always show different methods, as some other people liked the first version better.

________________________________

The third and fourth inversion exercises were back-bends. The third was a pretty ingenious modification of wheel pose that used a partner to take strain off of the hands and back. This was definitely the easiest of the inversion exercises, and I wish I'd thought of this one years ago - it's a great hear-opener pose.

The fourth inversion exercise was a c-r-a-z-y acro yoga pose that I never though in a million years that I would be able to get into. The base lay on the floor on their front in cobra pose. The flyer then placed their hands onto the base's calves, and proceeded into the second handstand exercise (3-legged dog, foot on spotter's shoulder, push up into handstand). They then proceeded through the handstand, into an upside-down back bend, and the base was to catch their foot with one of their hands! It was a very intense pose, and proved to be a bit too much for my inflexible back, but I did get into the pose for a second - a second that I am very proud of.

________________________________

All-in-all this was a fantastic way to kick off my weekend, even if it involved getting up early on a Saturday and going out in 10* weather.

While inversions may not be necessary for a yoga practice, they're fun if you do them safely and know your limits. Listen to your body, challenge yourself, and make some new friends and help each other on your fitness journey! And if all that fails, drink some juice! (Thanks for the samples, Grove Juice Truck!)
